“You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.”—Dr. Seuss

SHE HID IN HER ROOM until Sellion had gone hunting. As per usual, she had slept for just a wink, and was already awake by the time he started shuffling around the house. Not that she was afraid of Sellion, his intimidating bulk and piercing eyes notwithstanding. He was just new, and she didn’t fully trust he intended her no harm.

Thankfully, Alyssa felt more rested this morning. She supposed almost twenty-four hours of induced sleep would provide plenty of rest for one person. She wondered how Arad was doing, if he found out about her absence. Was he worried? Or did he trust Sellion to keep her safe? What about Mac? Did he trust the Prime Dagger, too?

She snorted. Of course they trusted Sellion. Arad would have never agreed to leave her with the man otherwise and Mac would have never tried to convince Arad to tell Sellion about their troubles. Wait. Did it mean she trusted Arad and Mac? Alyssa scoffed in derision, silencing her crazy voice. She trusted them—it was a known fact. But did she trust them enough to know, without a sliver of doubt, they had only the best intentions for her?

Her instincts were screaming yes. She supposed if there was one thing she could trust, it was her instincts. They have saved her bacon more than once, got her through some pretty close calls unscathed. So, inherently, she trusted Arad. She trusted Mac. What about Sellion? What had her instincts to say about him?

She ruminated for a while. They were undecided; too soon to tell.

Opening her door just a fraction, Alyssa listened for movements. She had an intense sense of deja vu. Not so long ago, she had done just the same, but in Arad’s apartment. Emboldened, she crossed the hallway to the bathroom. After she took care of her needs in there, she ventured out into the sitting room, then the kitchen.

A covered plate was waiting on the table for her, something she knew from the big piece of paper taped to one side which had her name written in giant block letters. Alyssa had to admit, small gestures like this one were warming Sellion up to her. Grumbling, she peeked underneath the cover and found some sort of fluffy pastries. They were still hot, and they smelled delicious.

Sellion was a pretty good cook. At Arad’s, they had servants and chefs and whatnot, so the quality of the food was up to the higher standards. But here, if they wanted to eat, they had to cook for themselves. Something that didn’t bother Alyssa in the least. Cooking calmed her.

Therefore, she savored Sellion’s offering and hurried to return the favor. On the tour yesterday, Sellion mentioned this den had been in the family for generations. Despite that, no one had bothered to remodel, as most sets of grandparents hadn’t set one foot on the property. Laid forgotten for so long, Sellion’s parents found the house and cleaned it up.
